Sorting Through Some Pictures...

We realized once we moved that my mom's American iPhone did not work in the Netherlands. She couldn't call or text anybody or receive calls or texts.  Because of this, she was able to get a new Dutch iPhone and everything was back to normal.  The good news for us is that an old iPhone can quickly become a new iTouch for children!

I don't love game apps as much as my siblings.  Ella and Abe have been using our first iTouch (a 1st generation iPhone that my mom once had), and it was loaded with games. Sadie and I shared my mom's newest old iPhone which was also loaded with games. Needless to say, our iPhone had gone into "Sadie-land" which was okay in a fashion. We had a cute background, the cover was clean, and it was often fully charged, but it once again was loaded with game apps. I decided to go through it and clean it up.

We had some apps which we loved that cost money, so I didn't delete those, but we had many free apps that were cluttering our iTouch, so I deleted them.

We also had a lot of junk pictures, mainly of Barnabas and video games because it had been in Sadie-Land for so long.  But there were some nice pictures, and I think that they're worthy.

We paint pottery with a friend for her birthday! (I made Ella's Christmas gift here!)

Our house in America, I wanted to keep this because I do NOT want to forget what it look like.

I see this everyday. All day.

Sadie managed to capture the glory of the light on his fat little body.

Have you noticed a pattern in the subject of picture? Welcome to Sadie-Land.
I love seeing people in agony. And I love seeing dogs in agony too.

Sadie's favorite stuffed animals: Hanna and Luvky

This picture isn't of great quality, it was taken a a not-so-clean room, etc, but just look at Abe's feet, the comical appearance and angle is the reason I kept the picture.

Kitty!

Barnabas and our two day trip to Austria.

Poor barnabas had to go outside in the rain!
Soon there will be more pictures and apps to sort, but in the meantime, I will be on duty and will keep the iPhone out of SAdie-Land.

Cherubim and Seraphim Chapter One

Cherubim and Seraphim
By Mia S. Rijnbrand

Dedicated to Kitty Meowie - a steadfast companion

Prologue
Molly Shire, born an heiress, married her true love upon her graduation of finishing school, and that was that. She settled down with her husband and everybody crossed her off their mental lists of eligible young ladies. But her ex-suitor, Sargon, wasn’t finished with her yet.  He, 20 years or more her elder, couldn’t have been a worse match for her. He was thin and sallow, with cruel black eyes and a wicked smile, while Molly was youthfully pretty and smelled like a fall breeze. But he had loved her from the moment he set eyes on her, if his emotion could be called love. She would be the perfect mother for his heir, and though she had denounced any claim he might have to her affections, he could wait.
And so he waited. He watched and listened as Molly bore her first- a son who looked and had the nature of a hungry snake. Sargon nodded with approval. This boy would grow up to have a nature as cruel and ruthless as Sargon, but he wasn’t Sargon’s heir. Sargon waited and watched.
All of a sudden, Molly’s husband died, and Molly, heartbroken, thought she would never love again, but she did. She married five more times, each husband living only long enough to see their child born. This is how Molly came to have six children from six different fathers. They all had a frosty and evil pride which haunted Molly. The children banded together and formed a gang, like wolves they knew they were stronger in numbers, but had no love for each other.
Sargon knew that Molly’s will was crumbling. He would propose again. He could be pretty persuasive when necessary he thought with a smirk as he turned to open the big leather volume on his disk.
When he and Molly had their first child, he took one look at the baby and his frosty triumph turned to cold hate.
His heir was a girl.

Chapter One
Seraphine brushed her dark hair with a ferocity that nearly pulled it out by the roots. The Snake had had an argument with Father and she had been beaten badly for it. The way that they saw it was that they could get back at Father if they punished her. She, after all, was the heir of both the estates, and so certainly Father would care somewhat.
But he couldn’t care less.
Ever since his first look at Seraphine he had given her the cold shoulder. Every now and again he would look at her, his eyes burning with a cold hate, which was worse, Seraphine admitted. The Snake hated Father and because The Snake was the leader of them Serphine was the object of the persecution.
How Seraphine wanted to be part of them! She wanted to band together with them and share their frosty pride and look down haughtily at all the other children like they did. But she couldn’t bring herself to do it. She had been looked down at with the reticent pride for too long to be able to do it to others, and besides, Seraphine wasn’t the frostlike type. She shined silver like the moon, but she couldn’t be frosty. Or snakelike. Or prideful.
“It’s very hard to be prideful and aloof when you don’t have anything to be it about.” Seraphine confided to her mirror. Virginia walked in. Second only to The Snake she was the frostiest and the haughtiest of the girls and could cleverly disguise her hatred and condescension in simple, sisterly sentences. But nothing could change her icy blue eyes. She never bothered to mask the hatred there.
“Mother will be worried about you, little Seraphine, if she catches you talking to yourself. She might think you have a fever, or such.” Virginia said. Seraphine translated this into: I shall tell mother that you have gone insane if you, filthy vermin, don’t stop trying to be one of us. She nodded meekly. Talking to Virginia was like poking a very hungry dragon in the eye. Anything you said could be manipulated into something dreadfully different. And she would get you, you could be sure.
“Good.” And with a cold smirk she walked off. Seraphine sighed and took out her book out of a secret pocket hanging from a belt inside her dress. None of them could get at it there. She had a feeling that it would not be above their frosty pride to read something as private as her book.
In it she scribbled:
Dear Book,
They have sent Virginia in here to talk to me again. At more and more frequent intervals they do it, now. I don’t think they know about you, dearest book, but they suspect something. I wear your belt day and night, but The Snake is smart and I can’t be sure that you will be safe.
Virginia has threatened to tell mother about talking to my reflection and is itching to get me in trouble. I’ve been lying low for quite a while and it is driving them insane. Mother might suspect something is up, but she isn’t the same anymore. I overheard one of their meetings and they said that mother has changed since Father came. Once they found out that I had heard one of their meetings,  I went without meals for two days. It was the only thing that they and Father have ever agreed upon before, I think.
In other words, something is fishy and I thought you’d like to know.
I remain ever yours,
Seraphine

Seraphine closed her book and put it into her pocket as she heard feet run up the stairs. The door opened and Abigail smirked. “I hope you aren’t talking to your reflection again. “ She said with a cool, mocking imitation of concern. Seraphine shook her head. Surely nothing could be ill assumed with shaking her head, right? Abigail must have agreed, because she and Annabelle walked gracefully down the stairs.
That was another difference between the others with their unfriendly pride and Seraphine. They walked, their pride keeping them on their feet at all non-sitting times, while Seraphine stumbled. Her knees looked battered and bruised but it was nobody’s fault but hers.

They were above violence. Their frosty pride might’ve been all that they had, but Seraphine didn’t even have that. I have my book though, she thought, and turned her grimace into a smile.

England Ahoy!

My mom has a thing for history.

Some moms would focus, when home schooling, on doing quirky science crafts, some moms would be totally lax and let their kids do whatever they want, but no, I happened to be born to the mother who teaches us manners, the fruits of the spirit, and history.

We all have mixed emotions.

Sometimes it's cool, like when we made stew that monks made hundred of years ago, or when we go on cool field trips, but sometimes it means reading 180 page books which are so factual they would be better off as bullet points.  This time it's cool because we are going to England. We're each studying a queen or king and are writing a narration about it.

Abe was born like my mom, where he has a knack for remembering facts (and football scores) about events in history and enjoys it.

Ella also remembers facts, and enjoys reciting facts relating to what we're learning to annoy Sadie and I.

As for me and Sadie, we can remember facts too. (That's the problem with hanging around with this crowd, you learn things!) We will arrive in England on Wednesday, baggage, useless facts, and all. We are all looking forward to a country that speaks English and the chance to show off whose king/queen was the most interesting.

Enthusiastically Yours,
My King: Richard the Lion-Hearted

Windmill!!!

There are few greater joys than cornbread. With honey, or butter, or plain, I dream about it. We've had trouble finding cornmeal here, and as I walked down a field with my friends, I picked up corn cobs. Then, I thought about how cornmeal is made, and I was determined to make my own cornmeal. I picked up all the corn I could find and told my mom. I would make it in the blender and I was thrilled. Then my mom jokingly suggested that I make a windmill to do the grinding. "Mom!" I said indignantly. I thought she was making fun of me. "Why would I do that?"I exclaimed.

Then, I realized why wouldn't I?

It was determined. I discussed it with Sadie and together we came up with a basic plan. We showed it to Dad, and he helped us turn our dreams into reality.

So far we have one propeller done.

Stay tuned for further updates.

Sleep (As A General Topic)

I love my room. I have a skylight window just above my bed that lets me the stars at night. I have other windows that help me see the sun when it rises. I have a huge comfy bed that lets me sleep in utter joy. I am equipped for sleeping well, but there are several pests that deter me from my dreams.

Pests:

  1. Centipedes! This horrid creature caught my attention when I was about to go asleep. Although I dealt with it within a minute, I was positive that millipedes were doing petty, obnoxious things like crawling over me and trying to strangle me.
  2. The Sun! It went down at 11:00 PM in the summer and was up by 5:30 AM. Now it is down by 6:30 PM and is up by 8:00 AM! We are all striving to find a wake-up schedule.
  3. Spiders! Grandpa and Grandma, I don't need to you about these, do I?
  4. Giant Flying Mosquitoes! Last night a giant one was flying around my room and landing on me. I tried going under my covers in all positions but the more I tried, the more I realized that it really is very difficult to not breath in Dust Mites when you are under a blanket. I didn't hear the wings anymore and I supposed that it wasn't in my room, so I closed the door! But the crafty devil just was locked in my room with me! I slept the rest of the night out in the hallway with a blanket and pillow.
We all need sleep. Each day we need the patience and even-temperament that sleep helps provide. In general there aren't many recommendations I would make for improving the Dutch lifestyle. However I don't see any downsides to installing screens in their homes! Stay tuned for further updates.

Dutch Need-To-Know

Hello! Today I was in the middle of a Dutch lesson with our faithful teacher Martine when I had a thought. I know that sometimes I don't make sense, and especially when I'm in a new setting, people probably don't understand what I'm saying. After thinking this I decided that the only reasonable thing to do would be to explain. And by this I mean to make a page devoted to explanations. I call it "Dutch Need-To-Know"

Dutch Need-To-Know will consist of a brief history summary, important places to go, important customs, mistakes NOT to make, and other recommendations. I hope that you will be able to understand my world with more ease and, if you ever happen to visit my world in these three years or later in life, that you will learn from my mistakes.

Yours Enthusiastically,

Mia!!!!

I Got a Haircut! (To My Mom's Secret Delight!)

On Saturday, I got a new haircut. My hair was simply too long and uneven, and I was frankly tired of looking like I just woke up from a nap 24/7. So, I let my mom take me to get my hair cut.

Tah-Dah! I hope you like it!.. Just Kidding. This picture was taken almost two years ago when I wanted to see what I would look like with bangs.

This is actually my haircut! Although you can't see it, I have a tiny little bang that is rolled up on the side of my head. I didn't know that I was getting it, but I'm happy with it.
